0.001 GB

1 MB is 0.001 GB.

KB/MB/GB are decimal (1,000-based); KiB/MiB/GiB are binary (1,024-based), which is what most operating systems show.

How it works

Explains the gap between the size printed on a drive and the size your computer reports, by showing decimal and binary units side by side.

Decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 B Binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 B

Example: A '1 TB' drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which the operating system shows as 931 GiB.

Questions people ask

Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?

Manufacturers count in decimal (1 TB = 10¹² bytes) while operating systems count in binary (1 TiB = 2⁴⁰ bytes) but label it 'GB'. Nothing is missing — the units differ.

How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?

1,000 in decimal, or 1,024 if you mean mebibytes in a gibibyte. Both figures appear in the table on this page.

How big is a bit compared to a byte?

A byte is 8 bits. Broadband speeds are quoted in megabits per second, so a 100 Mbps line downloads at about 12.5 MB per second.
