How it works
Fuel figures are quoted differently in almost every market. Enter the number you have and see all four conventions at once — including the UK gallon, which makes British cars look thirstier than they are on paper.
Example: 7 L/100 km is 33.6 MPG (US), 40.4 MPG (UK), or 14.3 km per litre.
Questions people ask
Why are UK and US MPG different?
The UK gallon is 4.546 litres against the US 3.785. The same car scores about 20% higher in UK miles per gallon.
Is lower or higher better?
Lower is better for L/100 km — it is fuel used for a fixed distance. Higher is better for MPG and km/L, which are distance for a fixed amount of fuel.
How do I work out the cost of a trip?
Multiply litres per 100 km by the distance in hundreds of kilometres, then by the price per litre. A 600 km trip at 7 L/100 km uses 42 litres.
